Article 30(2) of the Broadcasting Act, Chapter 350 of the Laws of Malta, requires the Broadcasting Authority to make and transmit to the Prime Minister a report that includes the results of independent audience research which ascertains:
- the state of listenership or viewership of broadcasting services provided in Malta;
- the state of public opinion concerning programmes included in broadcasting services provided in Malta;
- any effects of such programmes on the attitudes or behaviour of those who watch them; and
- the types of programmes that members of the public would like to be included in broadcasting services provided in Malta.
Since June 2004 the Broadcasting Authority has commissioned the National Statistics Office to compile data through telephone interviews that is representative of the whole population. The analysis of these interviews is contained in the reports listed below.
Telephone interviews conducted by the National Statistics Office are done on a continuous basis; every day for all the weekdays of the analysis. These are done between 4:00pm and 8:00pm from Monday to Friday and from 9:00am to 1:00pm on Saturdays and Sundays. At the end of each broadcasting season, the data collected is passed on to the Broadcasting Authority for analysis and publication.
Respondents are randomly selected to be representative of local households.
No personal data is ever passed on to the Broadcasting Authority - gender, age and locality of each respondent are forwarded to the Broadcasting Authority for data analysis and are combined with a numerical counter.
